The Amish Farm and House Lancaster Reviews
Great place to see how the Amish live Jul 04, 2016
Located in a shopping center with PetSmart and Panera, and right next to a Target department store, the Amish House and Farm can be difficult to find, as there are no signs along US 30. I was told by staff, that they are not allowed to put signs there. Basically, if you pass by the Target, then you went too far.
The Amish House and Farm was a working farm that dated back to 1715, and was opened to the public in 1955. This was the very first Amish attraction. It has shrunk, losing space to the surrounding shopping center. But hopefully, this will not be the reason why this attraction gets missed.
Amish House and Farm consists of 3 different parts, which are a house tour, farm, and one-room schoolhouse.
1. Farm – this part can be seen on your own, and consists of different farm buildings and animals around the place. These buildings date back over 2 centuries, and very interesting to see how things were back then. Some of them include the Blacksmith shop and tobacco shed, as well as seeing a water wheel and windmill that once helped power this farm. And it is a mini-zoo, with a variety of farm animals on display. Plus the option for kids to ride on old scooters in a marked path. Definitely worth checking out.
2. House – this could be seen only as a guided tour, where one gets taken to different rooms that are typically found in an Amish home. They would include a typical girl’s bedroom, boy’s bedroom and parents bedroom, among others. Also in the girl and boy bedroom, is a collection of Amish clothing that they would wear over their lifetime. This should not be missed, as it does get into what everyday life is like for the Amish. The only downside, can be the crowds, as it can make it tough to take photographs without people being in it. But that is a nitpick on my part.
3. Willow Lane Amish One-room Schoolhouse – Building that houses a display of what an Amish schoolhouse looks like, with its one-room classroom. There are desks, with old textbooks on them. Each one has a copy of a different textbook that may have been used over the years. And yes, you can sit at the desks, and look through the textbooks. There is usually a docent that can answer any questions one may have. The one that was there when I visited, used be an Amish teacher, and was very interesting and knowledgeable person to talk to. Very interesting, and hopefully not get overlooked, as it is located farther away from the rest of the farm, and does not seem to get a lot of visitors.
The Amish House and Farm does give a very good glimpse of how the Amish people live, as their way of living has changed very little over the years. This place should not be missed at all!
And hopefully, it will stay around for many years to come, and not get swallowed up by the modern world.
