The Neoclassical Trilogy ! Jan 02, 2012
History :

The Academy, the University and the National Library, representing the ambitious attempts by the 19th century architects to endow the city with monumental new buildings.

The Academy , erected in two phases (1859-1863 & 1868-1885) with funds donated by the benefactor Simon Sina and to plans drawn up by the Danish architect Theofilos Hansen. The Academy is regarded as the finest of Hansen’s buildings in Greece.

The University , a severely symmetrical structure built between 1839 and 1864 to plans by Christian Hansen. Note the wall paintings on the façade (by the Bavarian Rahl and the Pole Lebietski) representing the birth of the sciences in Greece.

The National Library , built to plans by Theofilos Hansen under the general supervision of Ernst Ziller. Completed at the beginning of the 20th century, it is remarkable for the majestic double stairway at the entrance. This is the most important library in Greece. Be sure to have a look at the interior, at least at the reading room with its solid wood paneling.

What around : Zappeion Garden (National Garden), Likavittos , Syntagma square , Greek Parliament .

How to go : Just couple meters away from Greek parliament to Eleutheriou Venizelou st. or you will found it also as Panepistimiou st. if you have double name or an old map ! You can take metro , Panepistimio station or just walk because is very close and in the historical center of Athens !

Tips : Bad luck for you if the university students making concentration or demonstration !And Don’t buy what ever they sell around many peddlers !

Opening hours and tickets :

It’s free to have some photo shoots from outside but inside you need a special university ID to entrance .

You can go free inside the national Library if you have an ID or passport and you are 18 years old ! And from 09:00 – 13:00 from Mon-Fri

Extra comment : When troubles start to Athens most of the time begun from there :( and always destroy many things from inside and outside (Academy and University) !

You can see the walls of Academy in my pictures , the young cannibals don’t use the as Schools of Philosophy, Theology and Sciences but as university of bad artists with many paintings and silly writes on the walls !

The photos are mixed from different visits from 2010-2012 !

P.s. I make the review like a small guide ! I know is more better and easier to read ! If you ask me what I like ? I like all of them and love to be a tourist in my city :)
