The oldest “cabin” in all of the local mountains can be found here in Giant Forest. One of the early settlers to the area, Hale Tharp, established a cattle ranch among the Big Trees. He was the first non-Native American settler in the area and as were all of the folks of his day quite handy. He built a simple summer cabin from a fallen, fire-hollowed sequoia log in the 1860s. He added a fireplace of stones, a window, and front door besides the furniture he put inside. John Muir later called it "a noble den." Crescent Meadow trail will take you to this unique residence off the General’s Highway in Sequoia.
