I must have driven past this museum a hundred times. I decided to pop in to have a look on my last trip to Cyprus. The influence the sea has had on the history of Cyprus is the major theme. The main exhibit of the museum is the ‘Kyrenia II’ vessel, an exact replica of the ancient ship of Kyrenia, of the Classical period (400 B.C.), which was built in 1985. The wreck of the original ship and it's cargo was discovered in Cypriot waters in 1967. It was the best persevered of it's era ever found. The replica was sailed all over the Mediterranean on proving voyages before being exhibited in Museums in New York,Japan and Germany.

In the basement of the museum is a collection of stuffed sea birds, fish and marine mammals. Not really my thing,I found it a bit creepy being down there on my own. Still the museum is well worth a visit on a wet day during your holiday.
