Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial Philadelphia Reviews
Out of the way, but very much worth it! Jun 26, 2016
The Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial is a small museum that serves as a tribute to a Polish military engineer, who helped the American cause during the Revolutionary War, and what he stood for.
Being out of the way from the main sights, and being quite a walk to get there, I can see why this place does not get a lot of visitors, even in the busy season. Certainly does not help that it is currently only open on the weekends. That would be a major shame, because this site is definitely worth the detour.
This was the place where Kosciuszko stayed during his time in Philadelphia. Now a museum, which does a good job with very good descriptions, telling the story of how he helped turned the tide of the Revolutionary War. And how he return to Europe, hoping to liberate Poland from the control of Russia. But that did not happen, and he would not live to see a free Poland. There are also some displays of artifacts, including some merchandise, which showed the legacy that he left.
There is the option to watch a short film, which is good and informative. And the display of the room where he stayed while in Philadelphia. Plus how he was opposed to slavery, and tried to help free men from slavery, even if he was friends with Thomas Jefferson (who owned slaves).
A short museum, but very much worth visiting, as this does get into another aspect of the American Revolution, about a guy who does not often get mentioned, if at all, in the history books in the US. Plus it goes to show once again, that the Americans needed outside help to achieve independence.
Admission is free, and for the time being, only open on the weekends during the summer. So if you are in Philly during a summer weekend, definitely take the time to visit this hidden gem.
Besides, walking to this place, is very much worth in itself, as the surrounding architecture of Society Hill is just nice to look at.
