Leper King Terrace Nov 09, 2013
Leper King terrace is also one of the features of the Angkor Thom area. Very detailed figurines cover the walls of the small labyrinth like passages in the corner of the major terrace in the front of the Royal palace. Whole large wall is covered with figurines in the six-seven rows. Here and there snakes make some kind of fan sculpture with their heads pointing up. This bas relief is way more interesting than a sculpture of the “Leper King” that gave this terrace the name. They told me that the name “Leper” came from the moss that covered the sculpture… it is kind of sad that this beautiful and ornate terrace is named for later statue that does not have much to do with the relief under it.

Funny name! Mar 23, 2010
The Terrace of the Leper King is situated very near Angkor Thom and was built under the kingship of Jayavarman VII. Although the temple is dedicated to Yama, the Hindu god of death, I am not sure what the original name of the temple is. The more modern name comes from the original statue of Yama which was situated in the temple; the statue was getting discoloured and covered with growing moss, and it was considered that the statue looked a little like a leprosy sufferer. Also, there was apparently a king who suffered from this condition, so maybe the term has some element of truth in Cambodian history. You will definitely pass this site as it’s just so near the main temples, so look out for it and realise the story behind it!!
