Best colonial town in Mexico Apr 17, 2011
Though we currently live in California, we are Mexicans and find time to at least twice a year travel in-country, mostly by car. Our current favorite small town is Tepoztlan. It is less than an hour south of Mexico City, towards Cuernavaca. It is really a happening place. The town leaders have very judiciously preserved the feel of a homey, no-franchises, attractive place. There are a lot of stores with high-quality handicrafts as well as "luxury" chocolates and mole (a mildly spicy sauce based on ground chiles and chocolate-try it before you judge!). The best day to go is Sunday, when they set up a local market for food and trade of goods from villages around the town. Lots of activity and the street food is great. The highlight of the trip, though, is to climb the stairway up tot the top of the "Tepozteco", the mountain after which the town is named. It is one of the few archaeological sites in Mexico at the top of a mountain. It is quite a climb, so take good shoes and be prepared to take an hour up. At the top they sell lemonade and other drinks. There is also a semi-wild family of possum-like animals that will have no problem digging in your pockets for food.

The view form the top, especially at the top of the pyramid, is fantastic.

When you come back down, treat yourself to one of the famous "TepozNieves" (ice cream and sorbet). The town is famous for inventing unique flavors of ice cream (cactus fruit, corn, tequila) and though some should never have been invented, there are others that are great and tasting as many as you want before buying is not frowned upon.

Treat yourself to a day in Tepoztlan, Mexico. You won't be sorry.

From Mexico city it takes only a couple of hours to get there. It is a cute town with a small mountain, easy to hike. Plenty of stands in the street to buy some souvenirs, drink the micheladas or eat some "paletas".

Ideal for a day trip!
