Bardstown, KY to Raccoon Valley, TN., Oak Ridge, Knoxville, Smokey Mountain Natl Park

Late November and it's cold. I have had several nights with weather below freezing so, it's still south I go. The ride down through Kentucky into Tennessee was pretty and an easy ride. I arrived at the Escapees Park in Raccoon Valley, TN. This is a small park nestled into a valley about 20 miles north of Knoxville, TN. About 15 miles west is Oak Ridge, the place that most of the work on the first atomic bomb was done. It was the home of the Manhattan Project. They have a museum which follow...

DAY 5 (6/29/08)Little Rock, AR to Memphis, TN (T.O. Fuller State Park)8pm / 81∞ / Still, cool with a deafening noise from all the animals and bugs in the woodsToday was a relatively short day driving from Little Rock to Memphis. Uneventful really characterizes the day. As we crossed into Tennessee, the might Mississippi River came into view (I have yet to take a picture because I was driving, but I will) and it is huge. It’s a gigantic river, with barges going up and down all day. And ...

Three things here.  1.  it is to damn expensive to fly in and out of Memphis.  This will be last time that I do this.  Even for work.  2.  NO FREE INTERNET at the airport3.  It is damn hot in here.  This is a NWA hub, so the whole airport is NWA centric.  Continental only has one gate that they use and no President club.  On my way back to Round Rock, TX

Today is a very, very special day - because I've always wanted to go through the Great Smokey Mountains, and today, we'll take a special drive right through the middle of them on the Great Smokey Mountains Parkway.  They are very famous for the "smoke" that seems to always hang over them.  It's really mist, and very beautiful.  This whole drive today will be really impressive with all the great scenery and also the funny local things you will see.  Look at the pictu...

Driving through Georgia into Tennessee produced some of the best radio stations in the country, mostly because it was all country. After our 8 hour drive we dropped stuff off at our hotel and headed into the Opryland valley and then downtown Nashville to have a look-see. Of course my favorite part was going to the Gaylord Opryland hotel and re-living my high school show choir memories, although dinner at B.B. King's Club was pretty good too.

Last night there was a thunderstorm, something to make this California-thunder-starved girl happy as could be.  The lightning seemed to cover the entire sky, but there was very little rain.  Weather conditions for today were predicted to be rainy and possibly thunderous.  Considering how long it has been since it has rained back home, this would have been a wonderful change of pace.  Unfortunately, up to this time of day, it is still dry. We crossed many creeks and rivers...

Day 1: Wow!  Arrived at the airport 1.5 hours before my 7:40AM United Airlines flight from Nashville to Chicago (then connecting to Hong Kong and then Singapore).  The airport was packed!  It is never packed in Nashville... and definitely never packed at 6AM.  After being in line for about 10 mins I heard someone say, "This isn't the line to the ticket counter."  I thought, "Oh... I have to check my back..."  When I asked, I was told the ticket counters hav...
