Sky High Views of Quito Ecuador Aug 06, 2012
Quito is the highest national capital of any country in the world. At 9000 feet, it is immediately evident by the chilly temps and thin air making it difficult for those of us who live at sea level to breath without a significant break-in period. Described as a "hot-dog" due to its long and skinny geography sandwiched in between long lines of mountains and volcanoes, the only thing more beautiful than the central square in Quito (see my review on sights around Quito) is to see Quito from another 3000 feet up. Teleferiqo is a gondola ride that takes up to 6 riders (and their bikes if desired) from the parking lot at about 10,000 feet the additional 2k in a 15 minute ride straight up the side of an active volcano. Once you get off on the top, there are trail networks that you can either hike, bike, or you can rent a horse and trail ride. Make sure you bring a jacket with you as the temps are an additional 20 or so degrees less than in Quito proper. It is also advisable to wear sneakers or hiking boots and a pair of jeans as the trails are dusty and will get muddy if it rains. The views are breath taking as you look down on all of Quito to include the airport where airplanes fly their approaches and take-off below you. You can actually see the planes on almost their entire route to Guayaquil on the Pacific coast. Bring a backpack and pack a lunch picnic with one of the best views you've seen in a long while!!

Awesome view from Quito and surroundings from the cable car - TeleferiQo Jul 16, 2009
Opened in 2005, the TelefériQo (from teleférico and Quito) is cable car, which runs from the edge of the city centre up the east side of Pichincha Volcano to Cruz Loma (lookout). It's one of the highest aerial lifts in the world, rising from 2950m (8850 ft) - 4100m (13,400 ft). The ascent takes 8-10 min. Although you won't climb, the altitude can affect you or at least you will feel it harder to breathe.

At the top there are restaurants, coffee shops and a variety of tourist stores. The highlight is the amazing view of Quito, volcanoes, mountains and surroundings. There are trails for hiking and points where you can take pictures. Due to the high altitude and the wind, it's considerably cooler than the city, so bring a warm jacket. You can also do mountain biking at the top and go down the mountain.

I was lucky it was sunny and not cloudy when I was there, so I got amazing views of the Cotopaxi, Pichincha and other volcanoes.

They offer a free shuttle from the bus stop to the cable car stop.

Adults $4.50 ($9 foreigners) - Teenagers $3.00 ($6 foreigners)Children under 10 $2.00 ($4 foreigners) - Over 60s and concessions $2.50 ($5 foreigners).

If you are in Quito, I highly recommend to visit this place and get amazing views of the Andes surrounding Quito

It's an amazing view, you can see not only volcanos and mountains, the most amazing view is the city at night, you can see main buildings and centre of the city. El Panecillo has a great view from Teleferico.
