One of the most important things to have when you do a trip that is not part of an organized tour, is a cellphone... Egypt is on the GSM band and its service providers are vodafone and Mobinil... They are ultra reliable networks as opposed to the US you will have reception almost everywhere you go in Egypt.. They utilize pre-paid sim-cards and will work with most tri/quad band phones... The reason i put a huge starrage on this one, is because we ran into several situations, where we needed to call some friends that we had in Egypt and hotels, transportations, etc. all of these things saved us so much time and hassle that it was completely worth it... Also very inexpensive... Only thing you will have to do is get someone who speaks arabic to activate your card for you... I would recommend guards, or hotel owners, etc... they will be trustworthy as will most people on the street even, but for peace of mind there are those alternatives... you can also visit these phone companies online as they are big providers for the world in general..
