Teddy's Place Paje Reviews
Nice place to stay (for the most part) Nov 18, 2011
We stayed at Teddy's Place for 4 nights on our recent trip to Zanzibar. There were many good things about the hostel and only a few bad, so lets get to it. Things I liked...
The location was great. We were about 100 yards from the beach. The beach, for the most part, was empty, except for other tourists and locals trying to sell trinkets. The water was crystal clear and the beach was clean.
The locals selling trinkets can get annoying. If you walk north on the beach about 100 yards, there are security guards from another hotel that prevents the locals from selling anything on their property. This is a good place to hang out with being hassled by the locals.
The food at Teddy's was excellent. Once you placed your order it took about 45 minutes to get your food, but that was because everything was cooked to order. I loved the seafood pizza. Breakfast was included in the price and you had a choice of 4 options to choose from. My favorite was the fried bananas. :)
Now for things that were so-so...
If you go to Teddy's make sure you like sand. It is everywhere, the floor in the Banda is sand, the bar area is sand, etc. The sand gets everywhere and that can become a problem especially when you want to avoid getting sand in your bed.
They have a shared bathroom and even though there are only 8 bandas, the bathroom can get busy. We were told that the showers had hot water, but we never seemed to find any. For the most part that was no big deal, since it was very hot and humid.
The bandas were OK to sleep in. There is not much ventilation, so it gets quite warm. We usually woke up in the morning with a thin layer of sweat on us. Teddy's does provide a fan, but it does little to cool the place off. Mosquito nets were provided, but there were some holes in ours. We woke up in the middle of the night to find mosquitoes inside our net. I don't think they were there before we went to bed.
The one thing I didn't like...
Teddy's seems to have a problem with rats. If people bring food into there banda, the rats come around. The couple in the banda next to us saw a rat in there room and we saw rat dropping on our bed. Teddy's seemed genuinely concerned and gave us new sheets and allowed to have one of their cats in our room. But once we saw the droppings, we were paranoid that every little noise we heard while we slept was a rat.
All in all though, it was a nice place to stay. The staff was friendly and courteous. They set up our snorkeling tour and our tour of Stonetown.
If you are in Paje, I would definitely recommend Teddy's. Place.
