Tecate is a brewery with a town built around it. The stacks of the Tecate Brewery are visible from anywhere in town, and there is always a hoppy, fermenting smell in the background. This is actually a very pleasant town, for a border town. At the town center there is a plaza, usually with something happening- mariachis practicing, a school play, and just people from town going about their business. Tecate Peak looms to the west, startling the US border and is home to health spas and holistic healing centers attracted by the mountains reported spiritual powers. Tecate is also the secret border crossing back into the US with a shorter line than Tijuana (Sshhhhh!) It's about 30 miles east of San Diego, in Baja California.

San Diego, California, USA -› Ensenada, Mexico -› ...
In the morning after some breakfast, the road trip phase began. A few years ago we bought the company trucks for a hundred dollars when they wore out, so we have big rusting hulks to drive in Baja. Rolf knew about a secret waterfall sort of part way between Ensenada and Tecate, behind some vineyards, across some ranches, down a road, across a bunch of creeks, then on foot down a trail, up another creek for a ways.... Th road to Ensenada clings to the cliffs far above crashing surf hund...

After the proper paperwork is filled out for an antique train to enter the country, we continue to grind down the slope to Tecate, following a pilot car required by the government. This is deep backcountry with only scattered ranches amongst the brush.Closer to town an occasional broken car starts to appear along the tracks, until both sides are surrounded by thousands of cars! This is the graveyard of all wrecked southern California cars- they pass through the junkyards along the border un...
