Tebay Southbound Services Oct 18, 2011
I know it's very unusual to write a blog about a motorway service area, but Tebay Southbound Services on the M6 are no ordinary services. They are situated in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside and surrounded by rolling green hills. Consequently the views are like no other motorway service area. The building itself is sympathetically designed and is in keeping with local architecture.

Then there's the farm shop, yes, a farm shop at a motorway services! The shop sells very high quality locally made produce. The restaurant sells quality 'home cooked' food, that is a direct contrast to the typical stereotype of terrible food at British motorway services. I had a 'hot pot' (a local stew) and it was delicious!

The weather was pretty awful on this visit so the picnic benches outside were not in use. I have been on more pleasant days and the outdoor facilities really make the most of the fabulous location, helped by the duck ponds located at the rear aspect. There is even a trail for dog owners to exercise their pets on long journeys.

Whenever I'm travelling South through Cumbria, I always make a point of stopping here and I've never been disappointed.

Tebay Services - possibly the nicest motorway services in the UK Apr 09, 2010
Why on earth am I reviewing a motorway service station? I know, I know. It looks suspiciously as though I am trying to bulk out the number of reviews I’ve written. Given that this is review number 246, I’d be suspicious too. Please bear with me, though. Tebay is wonderful.

Most motorway service stations in the UK are incredibly depressing, corporate affairs, with obnoxious music and horrible plastic chairs, and a stunning view of a grass bank separating you from the tailbacks on the motorway. There is usually a Burger King, a WH Smith, and somewhere selling heat-lamp pies and soggy curry for about what you would pay for two courses and wine in a real restaurant. Most service stations are not, in fact, Tebay.

Tebay is on the M6 in the Lake District, and has stunning views over a landscaped duck pond towards the mountains. There is a café, an organic restaurant serving wonderful food, and in summer there is a burger place outside where you can take your burger and sit by the duck pond. There is a dedicated dog walking area, too, and a shop selling organic food, meats, jewellery and cool sauced and deli things. Although the prices are higher than burger king, it is considerably cheaper than the heat-lamp muck that most motorway service stations serve.

I do have to warn you that my friend Jenni HATES Tebay because there is no McDonalds, which to be honest, is reason number four why I love it (after incredibly nice food, view of the mountains, and spotless loos, and just ahead of interesting shop). So if you have a craving for fast food you might want to stop somewhere else. For me, however, stopping in Tebay means that the motorway journey becomes something to actively enjoy, and the holiday starts a few hours earlier, rather than an expensive necessity like it is if you have to stop further south.

Not a stall, but I think the restaurant serves sausage and mash, as well as some world-beating macaroni cheese!
