Teatro Romano (Naples)
Teatro Romano (Naples) Reviews
Great set up!! May 04, 2011
This theatre can be seen in conjunction with Napoli Sotterranea, for which there is a 10 Euro fee for both sights (see my other review on Napoli Sotterranea!).
The theatre has been around before the time of Nero. It was so famous that Nero performed himself as a budding actor here. Once an earthquake occurred during his performance, and in sheer egotistical style, he proclaimed that the disturbing noise was actually the gods applauding his talent! The theatre is pretty earthquake proof though, due to the way it was built (in the walls, certain sections were constructed in a diamond style which absorbed the tremors).
Quite remarkably, this theatre has been preserved despite the presence of a house on top of it. I am sure that the builders knew about the archaeological gem underneath, and covered it up for their own gain. But it’s makes for quite a fun feature now. You are walking down what appears to be a normal house, and as soon as you enter the main living room, up comes the barrier and you have access to the ancient theatre.
Well worth considering if you are in Naples and want to see something unusual.
