New Zealand's original inhabitants are the Maoris who arrived from near Tahiti in seven large canoes about 1,000 years ago. Like many other countries, New Zealand is trying to include a minority culture into the nation. The Maoris seem to be holding on to their traditions and language better than most, at least in their own villages. In the larger cities, such as Auckland, its a different story.
