Which taxis to choose, which ones to avoid. Dec 30, 2013
For such a small island, cabs here are not cheap. Specially if you are a tourist and don't. You can easily be spotted and lose your way in negotiating the right deal when you stop a cab in the street, especially if close to the touristic areas like "Sliema" or "Valletta". Yet, not all cabs are the same.

A- White Cabs: in a word, avoid unless in a hurry/emergency

These are the majority of cabs wandering around the streets and around touristic places. Most likely they would overcharge you, unless you really know how the far the place you are heading to is and you have a rough idea how much you should pay they would win the deal. However, they would come in handy in a case of emergency or when you are particularly in a hurry.

B- Standard Rate Cabs: Your best choice, if you can wait 15 mins.

They are run by Cab companies that set standard rates for a journey between one area and the other. The prices for a cab of 4 passengers (Dec 2013) range anywhere between 8 euros and 32 euros. You can usually check their websites (listed below) for your trip and how much it would cost. This is a small list of some of the cab companies.

1- eCabs

Tel: 21383838

My cabs of choice, very punctual and the drivers are usually very informed of addresses, they won't spend much time asking people on the street for directions.

2- Cabs+

http://www.cabs.com.mt

Tel: 80073770

My second choice, almost as good as ecabs.

3- Yello Cabs

http://www.dialacab.com.mt

Tel: 22982298

These cabs take up to 5 passengers, yet for some destinations they are slightly more expensive (1 or 2 euros difference). Never tried them.

Notes:

* It is always better to check the price of the trip online before you book the cab, or ask the agent over the phone how much the trip would cost. Some standard cab drivers would try to overcharge you and they keep the difference.

* If you have to take a white cab (no standard cabs available or you can not wait...etc) you can check quickly online or over the phone how much the trip costs for a standard cab and negotiate for that price and tell the cab "but for that trip we paid such amount using ecabs" that usually works or lowers ur price to an acceptable one.
