Taxi fares are very reasonable. I always went solo, so I don't know if there was a per person charge. The taxis do not have meters, so you must negotiate your price before you get in. Typically, it should be around 150 Dominican dollars which is about $5US. (Dominicans usually pay around 120) If you are catching a taxi in the colonial quarter (Zona Colonial),they will charge you 200-300 (because its the tourist spot). Make sure you have the exact amount you want to pay. The don't seem to carry change.
They dont really cruise the streets looking for clients, they are usually parked. If you need to call for a ride, they are very prompt, and usually arrive within minutes. (The taxis do charge about $25-$30US for a trip form the airport. No bus service, either) There are other options to the taxis, if you don't mind cramming into a small beat up cars and minivans with strangers... I believe they are called "públicos". They usually drive fixed routes, like up and down a main street. They stop anywhere you flag them down. the fare is US$0.35. There are also numerous buses, which will get you across town for under 50cents. |

I have to say it, I’m beat. And with so many new personalities to meet everyday, I’m also… My first week in Santo Domingo |
