Taxi from/to Kiev main airport Boryspil Airport Reviews
Just a couple of hints to avoid a taxi rip-off Mar 01, 2011
This is to give you some ideas how to save on taxi ride if you arrive to the main Kiev's airport - Boryspil (pronounced as 'Borispol').
As soon as you pass the passport control, you will need to through the crowd of gypsy cabmen persistently offering their services and even promising to provide you with a receipt. All official guides normally would talk you out of accepting their services as unreliable. I would recommend you to ask for the price (just to have a point of reference) but bear in mind they will offer you the doubled price. Then you may go to a taxi boot you can easily spot in the departure hall and then ask them for the price to your destination. I was offered to pay 250 UAH for the trip to the city center. At this point you can immediately start to haggle. In fact, this kind of trip shouldn't cost more than 200 UAH (~45$ according to the brutal exchange rate you find at the airport). Well, here comes the moment for your informed choice: at this point nobody prevents you from coming back to gypsy drivers and offer them your price. You will ask: "Where's the logic? Why do you recommend to do it instead of riding an official taxi then?!" The fact is that even if you pay at the taxi boot, you probably will be brought to the city in a car which does not differ from others in the streets (my driver even put off his yellow taxi roof sign right before leaving the airport) - mainly cramped Daewoo Lanos or something similar - and bearing no official taxi signs.
If you go to the airport, it's highly recommended to call for a taxi as your ride will be cheaper: around 170 UAH (~37$ if you change cash in town)or even less.
While making some short taxi trip within Kiev downtown, keep in mind that it should cost within 4-7$ meanwhile local drivers will try to charge you the double price again. In other words, Kiev looks like a perfect place to hone your negociating skills ;)
NB: all prices and exchange rates given as of mid-August 2008.
