Taxi In Moscow Reviews
Taxi in Moscow May 28, 2013
Car is the best way to run through the city for a busy traveller. Following are the facts you need to know about Moscow traffic.
There're three types of car ready to pick up a weary tourist.
1) Taxi service. Tons of them. Price in economy class is somewhat similar and starts from 350-500 roubles. Usually they charge you by time so beware rush hours. Also charge for excessive waiting and trips beyond Moscow Ring Road.
Despite the fact you have to call it by phone and dispatcher lady usually knows no language but russian, I reckon it to be the safest way so highly recommended, especially if you have russian friend beside ready to make an order for you. You also need a local phone number to be called back on taxi arrival.
2) "Bombeelah" (the one who makes money using his own/his boss' car). Some people do it for money, some do it when they're bored but anyway it's widely spread in Moscow. Just appoach the road and lift you hand up. You'll see a car pulling over within a minute or less.
Fell free to refuse with a smile if you don't like the car or driver. I don't recommend using old russian cars with drivers from Central Asia or Caucasus. This may seem abnormal and rude but it's russian reality: most crimes are commited by foreigners - nationals of CIS countries (ex-USSR). Your best option is office clerk trying to earn extra money or professional driver that use his boss car in his spare time.
Disadvantages: sometimes you'll be asked to show how to get to the final destination. Not a problem if driver (or you) have GPS navigator. You need to know what the approx. price for you route is. Haggling is acceptable. I can recommend it if you're familiar with the city, know a little russian and have been living here enough to spot potential criminal ;)
3) Old russian cars with "TAXI" sign on the roof. Usually gathers around metro stations, railway stations, airports, clubs. Intrusive. Overpriced. Don't use it ever.
A few words about traffic. Moscow is sink in traffic jams. Everybody's going to the center in the morning and back in the evening. Feel free to consult google maps or probki.yandex.ru before you decide to go anywhere by car. The best months for using car in Moscow are July and August.
