Nice restaurant tucked away in park Dec 12, 2012
Taverne Meer en Bosch is a restaurant in a farm style house, tucked away in Meer en Bosch park in the west of The Hague.

It is sort of a yearly tradition to eat there in the game season, in fact because of one particular dish: their fillet of hare saddle.

The restaurant can be best described as "urban countryside" style as far as the building is concerned (it is an old manor), and elegant and upscale, as far as the table setting and dressing is concerned.

Before starters we were offered an amuse, being a small cup of lovely soup made from Jerusalem artichoke, not to be confused with normal artichoke, coming with fresh baked flat bread.

The starters we had were a half dozen of yummy fresh oysters and a bisque from Canadian Lobster and Dutch crabs, which was very tasty and very elegant of texture. It came with a mini glass of Pernod and some cream. With a nice glass of Chardonnay, the dinner took off well.

The main dish was fillet of hare saddle, which of course is a seasonal dish in autumn and winter. You can order this for a minimum of 2 persons. The meat is cut and portioned at the table, and comes with a set of seasonal vegetables such as red cabbage, mini Brussels sprouts, chestnuts, chestnut puree, red braised pears (a very traditional Dutch side dish) and potatoes. Topped with a dark gravy and a glass of their home M├ędoc wine, this was an absolute delight.

As the portions are more than generous, we passed on the dessert and had an espresso coffee instead.

Service was pleasant, maybe a little formal, but they took their time to explain about the food and the wines, as the restaurant was not busy that evening.

Prices are not cheap. The main dish for two was Euro 78, and adding wine, drinks, starters and coffee, your tag may easily get up to Euro 130 or more for two persons. But this being an annual tradition, and considering the ambiance and the quality, it was worth it.
