Tasman Backpackers Devonport Reviews
Excellent Working Hostel in Devonport, Tasmania Jul 22, 2015
Tasman backpackers is an incredibly ideal place for any backpacker looking to get their farm work done for the second year Working Holiday Visa, while simultaneously getting to explore the amazing wonderland that is Tasmania. Tasman backpackers isn't much too look at at first glance but this place definitely grows on you. Its a bit out of the way but not so much that it's a hassle to get basic needs taken care of, still within fairly reasonable walking distance to grocery stores and the beach. (about 20 - 30 minutes). The best thing about Tasman Backpackers is that they arrange farm work for you through various farms. When you check in you fill out a work application and then the staff will contact when they have found some work for you. They also arrange transportation to and from the work locations. The work may vary depending on what they find. You may work 3 separate jobs in one week or work the same farm for a month. Most people I know that have gone here have had luck finding work, just be sure to check what type of work is available for the season and that will help you gauge your chances. Book fairly early in advance as this is a hotspot for backpackers needing farm work. The hostel itself is a decent size. It looks a little run down at first but after a few days i didnt even notice it. The community center is big, you have 4 rooms attached to each other, a dining room, which leads into a living room with chairs and tables, a little room off to the side with a few couches and a tv on the wall as well as bookshelves to pick up something to read if you wish, then theres a door in the back that leads into the hostel's home theater. A decent size mini theater with a huge screen where people gather at night to watch the latest tv shows or have a movie night. (which the hostel does organize a couple nights a week, 8pm movies for anyone available). The dorms are just your average dorm rooms, not co-ed, and run $20 dollars a night. There are 3 kitchens, you have one main kitchen connected to the dining room and 2 much smaller kitchens down the main hallway. People use these mainly because they have ovens! Which is rare for hostels these days. Out the back door they have an elongated picnic table with an electric BBQ, great hang out spot at night. There may be a few issues with noise at night if that's something that bothers you. I suggest ear plugs, the walls are pretty thin and on active nights you can hear a lot of whats going on in the living areas. As far as things to do around the area, if you have a car, or would like to rent one either yourself or with some friends you brought along or met at the hostel, your within about an hours drive down to Saint Claire National Park where there are a variety of incredible hikes you can do. Namely Cradle Mountain which if your into nature hikes, I highly suggest you do. There are a few different day trips you can take from Devonport. AS for the town itself, Devonport is a fairly quiet and low key place. It's a convenient location if you intend to take the Spirit of Tasmania (Ferry from Devonport to Melbourne) over to St Kilda or are coming from there. They have all the facilities you would need. Note there are only two computers at the hostel operating certain times of the day, these get a que so be wary of that, and the showers are in great condition however they have a 3 minute hot water timer.. something to know going in. There's also conveniently a little mini shop behind the check in desk where they sell some snack food, soft drinks and beer. Making it easy to drink with some friends if you don't wanna walk to the store to pick up some beer. Overall I would suggest this hostel to anyone passing through Devonport or anyone looking to get their farm work completed hassle free. The social environment here is top notch, I had absolutely no trouble meeting people and making some great friends here. The staff was also really helpful and accommodating. They offer refunds for pre-payed days on a case by case basis. They usually want you to stay your entire booking but if you explain why you have to leave early etc they usually refund your money. Also note this hostel is for international guests only, they weren't taking in locals when I was last there. I enjoyed this aspect of the hostel because it prioritized backpackers who needed to get the farm work done, where as locals don't need that service. All up, it's a great place to stay! :)
