Tashkonak Hotel Istanbul Reviews
Friendly hotel Aug 11, 2012
This hotel is located on a good location in a quiet backstreet. It is a couple minutes walk away from Arasta Bazaar (literally three corners and you're there) and about 5-10 minutes from the Blue Mosque and Ayasofya. I have to note however that the neighbourhood is spotted with hotels and hostels, so you won't have any problem finding one close to the sights. I booked a room here after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. It cost me about 700 euro for 11 nights. I stayed during Ramadan and the end of it, so that may have driven up the price.
The staff is friendly and helpful and all receptionists speak English. The lobby also offers some informational books and travel guides. It's open 24 hours, but they lock the door at night, so you'll have to knock.
The room was good and clean. It had a double bed, a closet (with safe), several power-outlets, a mirror with a small stool, a phone and a TV with some English channels. Further it had two windows which could be slid open and an air-conditioner that worked great. The size of the room was decent, but it may feel a bit cramped if you stay here with two persons. There was a refrigerator refilled with two bottles of water each day. The rooms are a bit noisy, so you can hear persons in the rooms next door or walking through the corridor. Not to the extent you can hear people talk, but one night I heard a baby crying on the other side of the hallway. Another note about the noise is the mosque located on the other side of the street. My room was on the back so it didn't bother me a lot. A couple of streets down is the rail, so the train might bother you, although I didn't hear it at night.
The bathroom wasn't up to date completely. The shower-holder was a but loose from the wall and the tap leaked a bit. The shower also could use some new sealant. All was cleaned properly, so it didn't bother me a lot.
The hotel serves a buffet-style breakfast on the roof terrace, which has a covered and open part. It offers views toward Asia and the sea of Marmara. They have a wide range of food, most common and some Turkish specials. Normal bread and filling, freshly baked and boiled egg, sausages, juices, tea and coffee to name some. In the afternoon/evening there's complimentary tea on the ground-level terrace, which is nicely shaded.
The hotel offers free Wifi. I had perfect reception in my room on the first floor, but it was barely enough on the roof terrace. There is a computer for free use in the back of the lobby. Not brand new, but okay enough.
The hotel offers pickup and drop-off at the Airport. Pickup normally is 25 euros and drop-off 20 euros, so price is a bit steep. Because I stayed a long period they made my pickup free. Due to the numerous pickup services it was a bit difficult to find them at first, but further it was arranged good.
