Tarquinia Overview

Tarquinia is one of the Italian cities with a splendid Etruscan necropolis. Buses stop immediately outside the gate of the city next to what is claimed to be the best museum of Etruscan remains and artefacts outside of Rome.

The necropolis, unlike the one at Cerveteri, is not immediately attractive - in fact it's rather like a building site where work has yet to start covered with builders' huts. However it does not take llong to realise that each 'hut' is actually the entrance leading to a flight of steps. At the bottom of each flight is a tomb and all have paintings. It comes as no surprise that the long-ago discovered tombs should no longer have perfect paintings. The marvel is that enough has survived from the 6th century BCE to give us a lot of information on the beliefs of the Etruscans - in particular their idea of an after-life. Outside each there is a poster showing how the painting is believed to look when complete.
