I thought for second maybe it's cause Malta sucked so much, but I realized Italy and Sicily just know how to do things right. I took a monster excursion today that went from 5am to midnight (due to the 2 hour ferry ride each way), and got the hell out of Dodge for a little bit and into the heart of…

Once we reached Taormina the bus began the climb up the mountain. It was a twisting ascent with hairpin turns. At one point we met another bus come in the other direction and we had to back up to a spot where the road was wide enough for us to pass each other. Even then the mirrors were…

Made some coffee, had some hot instant oatmeal, and a nice conversation with Tina, gave her a load of fresh newspapers "in English!" she exclaims. We get into a most interesting discussion with Alex from Holland from everything to war, Bush, his bus trip all over America, to Bhudhism to Spirit. Nic…

Thursday, 10/8/09Liz and Mags were itching to go to the western side of Sicily (we all wanted to see Erice, but decided it was too far for a day trip - we were told it was an 8 hour round trip). Liz especially wanted to see a cathedral at Monreale, and the ruins at Segesta, but I wanted to spend s…

Tuesday we departed the Domus Mariae around 9am for a full day trip to the hilltop town of Taormina. Melissa and I had begun spending a lot of time together and sat with one another on every bus ride - usually finding some comfortable position in each other’s arms or laps in which we could …

It took the cab driver 45 minutes to reach Taormina centre. We had given him the adress of B&B Villa Galante, but no way he could find it. Eventually I had to call Rose, the owner of Villa Galante, to hand over my mobile to the driver to explain the way to the villa in perfect Italian. Turn rig…

From Pisa 2 Cinque terre 2 Siena 2 Assisi 2 Amalfi Coast 2 Sicily all in 9 days. The Italian drivers are crazy!!! Overtaking on a blind corner on a cliff edge of a narrow rd with a bus coming for you in the other lane at 130km. Not us! but this is what your ordinary driver in Italy seems to do and all of them have bumps and scratches on their cars!!! So we are home safe and well. Highlight of trip: seeing a live active volcano check out the photos!!!

BEAUTIFUL TAORMINA!!! The train station is actually in an adjoining town called Giardinni Naxos, and we took a taxi to Taormina itself which is located up a wonderfully windy road. Arriving in the early evening, we settled into our apartment, and it was like a load off our feet. Putting our things …
