Disappointing, Small and Drab Jan 02, 2011
Marrakech's Tanneries can be found in the eastern medina, very close to the Bab Debbagh. Follow your nose once you get close...

Having been to the Tanneries in Fez earlier in the year, I must say that I was disappointed in Marrakech's counterpart. It was rather small and lacking in colour by comparison. The smell was pretty bad, but expected.

Essentially, you'll see men working in big vats of stinking, mystery liquids along with animal skins, carcasses and furs hanging and drying in the sun. Pigeon dung is used in the dying process, thus helping to explain the smell. Your "guide" will offer mint leaves to hold under your nose to combat the smell, but it's not THAT bad.

There will, no doubt, be an opportunity to purchase leather goods here, but you can find the same items with similar pricing anywhere in the souq, so you won't get a great deal here, per se. I paid 20 dirhams/ person for the guided "tour".

Wear closed-toed shoes here FOR SURE as you don't want to get any liquids on your bare skin *shudder*. Really, there are more interesting things to do in Marrakech, and the Tanneries are not a "must see" attraction, in my opinion.

Much better in Fes Apr 12, 2011
The tanneries in Marrakech are actually quite far away from anything else in the Medina, in an area where there are very few tourists. If you end up having a free guided tour it will end up with a very rude man demanding 100 dirhams or so. Selection of products was disappointing.

See the tanneries in Fes if you go there, some good quality products there.
