Tannerie Chouara Fez Reviews
Interesting site in Fes! Nov 14, 2010
The Tannerie Chouara is an exciting and amazing place to visit in the medina area of Fez. I have described this place as very cheap; I got in for free but sometimes, I heard that the guys at the door might expect a thank you for 10-20 dirhams. I just heard this as a maybe, so am not sure, so this is just a heads up.
The tannery does smell of course but you get used to it very quickly. You see all stages of the process, from the cleaning and processing of the skins, to their colouring, to the skins being dried off in the heat. The men stay very active and diligent with their work, and it’s certainly not a career choice I would want. Apparently, pigeon dung is used to treat the leather too.
The tannery is often visited by large tour groups, so you may wish to time your visit for just after they have left! However, sometimes it’s very useful to follow them in or out in case you’re lost! This site is well worth a visit for anyone visiting the old part of Fez.
