Northern tip of Borneo Jul 10, 2011
If you ever find yourself travelling to Sabah, then head down to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, in Kudat area. The significance of Tg Simpang Mengayau is that it’s the northern most tip of Borneo. It’s also where the South China Sea meets the Sulu Sea.

The journey to Tg. Simpang Mengayau is about 3 hours drive from the capital city Kota Kinabalu. As Kudat is home to the Rungus people, you’ll pass a number of villages along the way. Stop by at these villages and check out their home industry. Some places to see would be Gombizau (honey), Sumangkap (gongs), Tinanggol (beads) and Bavanggazo (longhouse living culture).

Well, you may also skip these villages and go straight to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau. The beach is pristine, with blue sea and white sand. On top of the hill, stood a flagpole and a giant globe, to signify the tip of Borneo. It’s a short stroll from the car park to the monument. The view from the cliff is just amazing.

Beyond the cliff would be some rock formation, extending out to the sea. Visitors are not allowed to go beyond the cliff, though there are some daredevils who just couldn’t resist the temptation. 

As for the facilities, there’s a café and public toilets by the hill side. And the last I went there few years back, there’s also a chalet type accommodation by the beach, for those who like to stay overnight.

There’s nothing much to do here except to enjoy the view and the silence. Pack yourself a picnic basket and just choose your spot at the beach.

By the way, the Borneo Music Fest is held here annually. You may check out Sabah Tourism Board website on the calendar of event.
