Tanera Mor Polbain Reviews
Wow! what a curious island! Jun 01, 2010
Tanera Mor is the only 'inhabited' island in the Summer Isles, a small archipelago off Polbain and Achiltibuie. There is no ferry service as such but there are daily trips in summer from Polbain and from Ullapool.
The inverted commas around 'inhabited' relate to the fact that there is now no permanent population.
Why curious? Only three islands off the coast of Great Britain issue their own stamps. Tanera Mor is the only one ooff the Scottish coast although in terms of size and population, many islands exceed it.
The trips to Tanera Mor go on without landing past the coasts of several more of the islands, rich in both cliff architecture and wild life. Common and grey seals and most forms of sea birds are to be seen in the breeding season.
Tanera Mor has several houses and a Post Office, which also serves light snacks in the summer. Their is a fine anchorage , hwich the Vikings must have welcomed and there are some fish farms around the islands.
Views from Tanera Mor embrace much of the western coastline as well as Skye
Part of the list Some Scotland delights
