tamarind cove - great beach Apr 24, 2011
Tamarind cove is located it on the west coast of barbados, also known as the golden coast. The hotel is right on the beach and the water is amazing. Great for snorkeling. Its a quite place where you can relax, enjoy the beach and some water activities (i.e. Catamaran). The breakfast and lunch are very good. Didnt have supper at the hotel though, because was going out for supper. Service was friendly but slow at times. I would definitely go back as the rooms are clean and offer a great view!

high class area, medium class hotel Apr 27, 2010
Tamarind Cove is on the west coast, ‘Platinum Coast’, just a few hundred yards down the beach from Sandy Lane. The beach front is impressively long, especially compared to surrounding hotels, and the few rooms with ocean views will have amazing sunsets. The problem I had was that it is tagged as a high class resort and priced the same way but I didn’t feel it offered much in value. The complimentary watersports was a big plus and wakeboarding everyday is good value but a lack of room service (they have it but don’t mention it or give you any menus), poor quality of restaurant food and dated facilities should have this place priced cheaper than it is.

The pools are very nice and a refreshing change from the ocean. There are numerous chairs that are well looked after on beach and pool sides which is all we were after so pretty happy there. Occupancy was very low whilst we were there, partially due to cancelled flights from Europe during the volcanic ash debacle, and it felt crowded on the beach and pool chairs. We had to get out early to secure them. I’m not sure what it would be like under peak occupancy, but I suspect not very good.

The bar is over by one of the pools and offers lunch and cocktails. The atmosphere isn’t all that impressive there as kids are throwing things are the pool at you and the wait staff seem more than bothered to have to take your order or produce a bill. Other hotel staff were much more pleasant. You are overwhelmed by restaurants outside of the hotel all of excellent quality so we never did an evening meal there. Based on the staff, the lack of ambience and the mediocre breakfast we had each morning I think we made the right choice.

The hotel site advertises a third pool which is more like a fountain/water feature that no one uses in the middle of the hotel, but don’t worry the other two are plenty big enough. It also advertise free internet in public places but this is untrue. When we asked for the WiFi password they said they don’t do it anymore despite the strong signal. You can jump in the queue for 3 PCs in the business centre but be prepared to wait a bit.

The room itself was lovely, albeit very dated, and our balcony was one of the few with clear amazing views to the ocean and the beach below. Many of the more expensive rooms are towards the middle of the hotel and I think they sell them as ocean view. Be ware of this because the numerous trees, huts and bushes will seriously impede the view from most of those rooms.

The resort is due to close Jul-Oct 2010 to refurb a restaurant, replace soft furnishings at the bar and put an ocean side restaurant in according to the GM. This will help a lot in my view and may answer for the staff unfriendliness as they’re probably out of the job at least for a while. The hotel will rebrand itself as a family resort which seems like a mistake to me, but I guess they know best. At present it was mostly attended by mid aged to older couples with the odd few families.

I wouldn’t go back, but I think it is a compelling choice on the west coast as there seems to be otherwise a big disparity between small hotels with less frills and very expensive ones such as Sandy Lane. If in the end this fits your budget and all you want is some sun time on a nice beach then you should check this out. If you want gourmet food and top notch service then you should look further down the beach.
