Tamale Lady of Parque La Merced Antigua Reviews
Late Night Tamales: Cheap and Plenty May 04, 2013
Somewhere along the way, my friend Angel had heard about this woman selling tamales at La Merced after dark. Since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to check it out.
We were surprised to find many vendors selling food in the Parque La Merced: Street tacos, sandwich looking items and more. We wandered about checking all the stalls trying to figure out who exactly we were looking for? A couple of vendors sold tamales, but there were no old women at those stalls. Besides, we were going on a recommendation.
Finally we spotted her on the southeast corner of the park along the sidewalk. Sure enough, The Tamale Lady of La Merced was on the job! And all she was selling was tamales! We each ordered up a tamale which was huge unto its own. Then she proceeded to put on a helping of guacamole, salsa, rice and all sorts of things tasty on Angel's order. I was not as daring and went with the simpler guacamole and salsa version.
Not only was it good and more than plenty, it was inexpensive too! About 10 quetzals ($1.31 USD).
I was happy we searched her out. It made for an interesting cuisine adventure in Antigua. So if you get hungry late at night and want a treat, check out this local treasure!
