taxi to Petra Jordan from Aqaba (or from Petra to Aqaba) Mar 12, 2014
As soon as you come out of the border crossing in Aqaba Jordan you will huge lot of taxis and tour busses. Right at the exit way, is also a sign board which indicates the taxi fares for destinations in Jordan. For Petra, the taxi fare is JD58.00 (March 2014). No need to negotiate because that is already a fix rate. You must be aware also that there is a taxi ‘mafia’ going on at the Aqaba crossing. As soon as you come out of the exit way of the border control vicinity, a man who will introduce himself as an employee of the Petra Tourism Department will meet you and tell you sharing a taxi ride is not allowed and then bring you to the taxi drivers in queue. Since it was okay to not having someone share the taxi with us, we got in to the next taxi in queue. The taxi drivers themselves, however are reliable and they do drive safely. Usually, the taxis are yellow but the taxis at the border crossing are painted in green and blue.

Coming from Petra to Aqaba, it is important to determine the final cost if it’s per person price prior to getting in to the taxi.

If you are interested in taking a private taxi, I can recommend to contact a good driver. But since I do not like to give out names on here, please feel free to send a PM in my inbox if you need one. I do suggest you should contact a taxi driver prior to crossing the border to avoid the “taxi-mafia”…I believe the taxi drivers are the ones whose badly affected here.

The both drivers are friendly and pretty good with conversational English. One of them knows a lot about the tourism industry in Petra.

If they invite you however to stop at a café and souvenir shops, feel free to decline if you don't want to.

Besides taxis, there is a domestic bus service from Aqaba city center to Amman and then Amman to Petra but since we didn’t go through this mode of transportation, I cannot write about it. But the best mode of transportation to go to Petra is through a taxi.
