Takayama, a city in the Gifu Prefecture, is located as some would say "the Alps" of Japan. With 100.000 people living there it sounds like a big city, but as there are hardly any high rise there, the city has more the feeling of a small town.
Especially when you walk through the streets and see the old houses, shops and local factories/breweries. You get the feeling you're in a part of Japan that hasn't developed that much. And at times you walk around, thinking: "Where's everybody?"
There is a walk path along several temples and gardens, you can hire a bike and explore the city and surrounding by bike or use Takayama to go the various places around the city.
