Taiwan aka Formosa ("beautiful" in Portuguese) aka Republic of China, is a subtropical island about 400km long and 100km at its widest point in the middle. Roughly shaped like a long leaf with a pointy end at the south. It is situated north of the Philippines and south of Japan along the east coast of China. The 180km or so wide Taiwan Strait separates mainland China and Taiwan. A mountain range runs north to south near the eastern side of the island, with plains on the west side. At its tallest point Yushan (Jade mountain), at 3952m, sometimes snow will fall and people would "go skiing". But mostly the island is really tropical, lush and green all year round.
The biggest city and capital is Taipei (Tai, short for Taiwan, Pei means North) in the north, with almost 3 million people and is the home to the world's tallest skyscraper (Taipei 101), it is a very densely populated city. Kaohsiung is the biggest city in the southern end. The new high-speed train goes from the north to the south in 90 minutes! But do stop in the middle, Taichung is the city in the middle of Taiwan, and the western gateway to the east west cross-island highway (which is very scenic) built by veterans back in the 50's and the beautiful Sun Moon Lake. Of course one reason to go to Taiwan is to sample the wonderful and diverse cuisines it has to offer! It rained pretty hard today, my last morning in Taipei. Got up early, had breakfast and went to the airport by taxi. The flight home was early, and I got home "before I left" Taipei. Got to love the time warp. It turned out I was lucky, because the United 777 airplane I flew was grounded for inspection the next day and lots of flights were cancelled.Home again, Kevin and dogs were happy to see me and vice versa. When unpacking, I noticed that the name of the portable travel teapot I bought yes...

People i met here who contributed to, and improved my trip: Portia (USA), Ann (Taiwan)
Ann dropped me off at my guesthouse in Taipei around 2.30pm and i was pretty shattered, so decided that a power nap was in order. A few hours later and i was once again refreshed and on my way out to meet Portia and Ann for Dinner. I had scheduled 6.30pm at Shuanglian MTS tube station, but wasn't too sure at which exit i should wait. I therefore arrived a little early and was pleased to spot only ...

I lost Christmas somewhere on a plane flying forward in time. I was assigned to a middle seat on a full flight, but the lady next to me asked me to trade places with her husband a few rows back. I get back there and find it's an aisle seat. Elbow space! Yay karma. Next stop, Taipei.

The boat docked in a suburb of Taipei called Koolown. While it was nice everything we wanted to see was in Taipei so we did a little research and ended up on the commuter train for Taipai. The trip was a little over 30 minutes long and it brought us right to the main MRT subway station. The subway stations in Taipai are really nice and they are very easy to use. We took the train to a station at the Chang Kashek Memorial (I`ll fix the spelling later) which is a tribute...
