Taman Tasik Taiping Mar 10, 2011
Taman Tasik Taiping, or the Taiping Lake Gardens, is the best thing that the historic Perak town of Taiping has going for it. Sure, the colonial-era buildings are nice, but the beauty of the lake gardens easily tops it. Formerly a set of tin mines, the lake gardens were created in 1880. Surprisingly, they have only gotten more beautiful since then as measures have been taken to maintain their cleanliness. The large trees planted on the south-side road have huge branches that extend over the road and reach down toward the lake. It’s a great place for taking photos, jogging, nature-watching (monkeys, fish, and birds), and making out on the numerous benches that surround the lake. There are paddle boats if you want to go into the middle of the lake. The famous zoo is just behind the gardens, while the city center is just a two minute walk away. Beautiful!

Dani--if you are taking a bus from KL or Penang (or wherever), it will drop you off at Kamunting. There may be a public bus from there that goes by the lake gardens on the way to Taiping. Otherwise, you can take a taxi. The gardens are only a short walk from Taiping city center.

The gardens are one of Taiping's tourist attractions, but are also popular with locals. Apparently, it was where my dad and mum used to go for dates - aww. Due to the amount of rain that falls, the gardens are lush and beautiful, with some old, old trees lining the winding roads, gentles grassy slopes and, of course, lakes. You can see lillies, lotuses, little red bridges, birds and monkeys roaming around. You can also go peddle-boating on one of the lakes, for RM5 per boat (two people, half an hour). This is a fun but sweaty way to spend your afternoon.I'm not sure if they're part of the lake gardens, but in the area is a natural swimming pool filled with water that comes from the mountains. There's also Maxwell Hill which you can climb or bus up; sometimes an early mist will come up and cool the air, but no matter what you do in Taiping, you won't be able to escape the heat if you want to enjoy nature.
The lake.
Almost like a golf course.

Historical Perak
Taiping has typically been a place (for me) that you drive past on the highway and just use as a marker to see how far you are to/from Ipoh or Penang. I knew it had some interesting sites but just di…Taiping Lake Gardens). These former tin mines were flooded and, oddly for Malaysia, kept very clean from litter, sewage…
