Tabor Vacation Guide

Tábor is a lovely little town in the Southern Bohemia Region, about 70 KM south of Prague and north of Ceske Budejovice. The town was founded in the spring of 1420 by Petr Hromádka of Jistebnice and Jan Bydlínský of Bydlín who were members of a radical wing of the Hussites, who also became known as the Taborites.

There are still several historic structures (including walls, guard towers and churches) and a few small lakes in the town of 36,013 as of 2005. The historic cobblestone town square of Žižka's Square has many fine restaurants and occasionally street performers entertain tourists during the summer months. There is also a large well-preserved church on the square and a beautiful sculptured water fountain.

The Lužnice River cuts the town virtually in half with the historic part of the town situated on the summit of a hill and the surrounding countryside. There is also an extensive lake reservoir given the biblical name "Jordan" by Hussites. This lake which was creted in 1492 is the oldest reservoir of its kind in Central Europe has strategic importance.

Tábor has some light industrial areas, some great bridges over the Lužnice River (including a modern suspension bridge) and a large walled monestary nearby. Please see this link to the offical website of Tábor: http://www.tabor.cz/en/
