Ta Keo May 18, 2014
Ta Keo is one of the large pyramid platform more than 1000 years old, with multiple levels, very lavish ornaments and it is of monumental size. It is located on the crossroads so almost every tour stops here and large groups can make your experience less that good. When I was there, extensive renovations and restoration support construction equipment was covering most of the walls but all areas were totally accessible for visitors. I like that way of doing things instead of closing whole place for “insurance” and “safety” reasons as it usually happens in Europe and US. Terraces walls reminded me on Neo Classical buildings from Europe. I wish that I had more insight of history of this temple and that I did not just rush it through. Other interesting thing is that most of the temples in the area are renovated with funds from China which was a bit of surprise for me.

Soft and intricate sculpture Mar 23, 2010
Ta Keo is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and is rather special because it is quite possibly the first temple that was entirely built out of sandstone. It was built by Jayavarman V and served as the state temple during his reign. Although many of the temples of the Angkor Wat complex are beautiful, it is well worth making the time and effort to see this one. The carvings are spectacular and unlike some of the other temples such as Angkor Thom, which have rather chiselled and strong sculptures, the carvings here are much softer and in greater detail. Well worth a visit.
