posted by:
Jun 22, 2007 - Jul 29, 2007
Very early in the morning it is time to get up and get ready to leave for Syria. But I don't have any signs of a hangover - when I try to make it to my feet's an walk to the bathroom I soon realize why I'm still drunk from the night before. I looked like it would be a very long day.   But being drunk turned out to be an ...

I’m taking a taxi from Amman to Damascus with the British engineer.  The rest of our little group of six have parted ways.  About 300 m from the border, the driver asks us to get out of the car.  He pops off the seat back revealing a hidden compartment into which he stuffs cartons of cigarettes to smuggle across the border.  He looks at me and touches his finger to his lips.  We get back in and cross the border without incident - no wonder the fare was so cheap...

Siria nos dió la bienvenida
posted by:

Into Syria

Today is Kim's birthday.  And for his birthday I organised a day-trip from Hama was to Krak de Chevaliers (Qala'at al Hosn) described by some as the most impressive medieval castle in the world. Now, this wasn't just another crusader castle ... this is THE one that we came to Syria for ... especially. It was mega huge, and pretty intact considering the little restoration and its age (around 800 years). Gotta to see the place to believe its size. Being a public holiday, the crowd w...

From Hama to Aleppo
posted by:
Oct 12, 2004 - Nov 09, 2004
Please note that links to external sites were correct when this blog was written.  However, they may no longer be valid.  From Beirut we crossed into Syria where we left Kim's parents for a couple of days.  On their own they enjoyed Palmyra (the most spread out Greek / Roman ruins we've seen) and Crac des Chevaliers (the most intact large Crusader castle from the 1100s where school children can roam freely and fall off the edges). While they were doing that, we spent some ti...
