Affordable place to stay in Sydney CBD Jan 31, 2016
S33°51.593’ E151°12.434’ A youth hostel on the Lonely Planet top spot of best places to stay in one of the worlds most iconic cities demands explanation, even more when all mayor hotel chains in Sydney CBD surround it. Their unhostel-like prices give it away the secret. This modern three-floor hostel - opened in 2010 - is actually a hotel without image and high Sydney hotel prices, but with spacious rooms and private bathrooms. We spotted some backpackers, but the majority of guests did not lift rucksacks.

Our twin room 306 on the third floor in December 2015 did not have a big window, but a large bathroom with shower, a double bed and a single bed. Both were comfortable. The room had a hairdryer and water cooker, no fridge (in the communal kitchen), television (in the television room) and Wi-Fi in the room, although premium in-room Wi-Fi is available. To emphasise the hostel image, fluorescent tubes light up the room, you have to do your own bed and there are no daily fresh towels and bed linen. On the other hand, sleeping bags are not permitted and the room is prepared to offer cable television and wired Internet in the future. Ask reception to turn on the air conditioning in the room.

On the reception level, four kitchens are available and in the living room, you can order cooked and continental breakfast while enjoying the essential free Wi-Fi. Booking four nights as YHA members saved us more than the yearly YHA membership fee. We paid AUS$174.50 per night for the twin room.

The piece de resistance is the rooftop terrace on the third floor with good view on Harbour Bridge and magnificent view on the Opera House (if cruise ships stay away). The TV room next to it give a penthouse feeling of a million dollars. During New Year, the terrace is off limits for hostel guests. YHA sells separate tickets to watch the fireworks.

Sydney CBD is an expensive hostel to stay. For a little bit less luxury, YHA is an affordable hotel at a great location in Sydney CBD. Do you disagree; go next door to the Sanghri-la hotel. Recommended.
