SwanLake Villa Resort Hotel Hengchun Reviews
Quirky hotel, but likeable once you decided to stay Mar 08, 2011
When we arrived at the Swanlake Villa Resort Hotel, we were quite surprised by the somewhat unusual style and decoration of the resort.
Driving into the resort you get through a somewhat kitschy gate, which resembles more a toll station, with the reception office in the middle between the way in and the way out.
The upstairs of the gate is actually the "restaurant", which only serves breakfast, no other meals. It is actually more like a canteen, with seating inside and outside on a terrace. In its own website (English version) they call it "restrunt". I don't know if that is a typo, or a way to tell that it is just short of being a restaurant... It is minimalist (some would say poorly) decorated but not really unpleasant to sit there.
Breakfast is local style. Western breakfast almost not provided except a hard boiled egg. Tea is OK, coffee is Nescafé style and "orange juice" is an orange colored liquid, but definitely not juice.
At the time I booking it, I had expected a somewhat natural lake with accommodation around it. But in fact, the "swan lake" was little more than a man-made pond (large one) with bright colored swan shaped paddle boats for the kids. And yes, indeed also one or two real swans and some ducks.
This was clearly a family oriented resort, rather than a retreat for tired business travellers like ourselves. The set-up was a number of "villa's", each containing two studio type units downstairs and two upstairs, each with their own entrances. These villa's were located on both sides of a circular small road that meandered around the somewhat pathetic "swan lake".
The units themselves (apparently time-shared owned units) are not bad. Enough space, reasonably comfortable beds (especially if you like a firm mattress), functional and well maintained bathroom, a desk, chairs to sit and a good size patio or balcony. LAN internet provided (while we were there, possibly also Wifi).
The park itself has some sort of outdoor spa with a cold water well and hot water spa. It is close to the road, so will be noisy, but they planted a garden to make it more secluded. The hot water spa, according to the hotel, has medical benefits thanks to chinese medicine in the water and the well bottom being made of mafia stones (no idea what it is, but sounds good... LOL)
Location: about 2 kilometers out of the village. Not much in the immediate surroundings. It is adviseable to have some form of transportation (rental car, moped, bike). And a 7-11 convenience store is located right across the street.
Let's say... when you arrive you may think: "what kind of a place is this???", but after your first amazement you may get some liking for this place. We surely did.
