Svartifoss Trail, Skaftafell, Iceland
Svartifoss Trail Skaftafell Reviews
Basalt Column Falls Jun 30, 2008
Going into Skaftafell National Park we parked near the campsite. There are large signs with maps that show you the route to get up to Svartifoss.
It's uphill, but not arduous. The path splits and you can take the high road or the low road, as they meet together again. I did high way up and the low way down, which more follows the course of the river.
Once up at the falls you can get down to the banks of the river, which is so narrow you can hop from side to side, and climb the rocks to get in behind the falls. Some of the rocks were wet, and at the time I wouldn't let my son try it, though I would now.
For all that the river isn't that big, there is still a good stream of water coming over the falls, and it looks very different from the other waterfalls, at least the ones I saw, coming over the black basalt columns.
Well worth the walk up to see, a nice stroll back down and great views of the Skaftafell mountain while you are there too.
