Suzhou No.1 Silk Factory Co. Ltd Reviews
Nice to have seen. Jul 13, 2011
It is a factory where you can see all aspects of spinning silk. Only it's more a demonstration plant with the best staff what they show you.
You first see the face of dolls.
Then how the wire opspinnen and finally make a quilt.
This is purely for sale. Think hard about it if you buy something.
You can also buy at the end of everything. They go for the most expensive. But it is wise to think.

This visit was interesting for me because I'm a guy from Lyon,a silk city involved in the silk-trade since the 14 th century and because, when I was young,I went every summer(we had 3 months of Summer schoolholidays!)in Provence where my aunt and grandma reared cocoons thanks to the abundance of mulberry trees in the area.
Entering this factory,a state firm of 300 people which mainly produces quilts and covers, you can see the process of silk manufacturing from the silkworm to the silk items.
First you enter a conference room where you have a brief talk about the silk process and where you can see all the various life cycle stages of the silkworm, the caterpillar of Bombyx mori fed with leaves of white mulberry during 6 weeks.
After you visit the workshop:the first step is to treat the killed cocoons with boiling water to separate the filaments bound together and to easily locate the end of the thread(a single cocoon can produce a thread mesuring over 1000 m!).
As a single filament is too thin to be used, the workers locate the ends of 7 or 8 cocoons and unite them before being put on the spinning machine which automatically produces a single thread of silk from the 7 or 8 cocoons.
The showroom at the end of the tour compared to the "factory" was immense with many shop-assistants and offers lots of high quality silk items like scarves, ties, beddings, quilts, women underwear.
Danielle bought a silk downjacket and underwear. Many people of our tour have had the pleasure to carry during several days the quilts bought there!
Of course, they also sell a lot of rubbish!
