Sutter Gold Mine Sutter Creek Reviews
A Peek into California's Gold Rush Apr 01, 2007
We stopped at the Sutter Gold Mine tour on the way back up from Volcano and the Black Chasm Cavern tour. This was a really enlightening look into the history of mining. Our tour guide is actually a miner, like his father and grandfather. It was very interesting to get his perspective on historic versus modern times.
Sutter Gold Mine is a modern hard rock mine located at the site of several historic mines. One of which is the Lincoln Mine from which Leland Stanford made his fortune and subsequently founded Stanford University and also partnered in financing the Central Pacific Railroad.
The gold mine offers a look into the gold mining process and the historical progression from gold panning and hydraulic mining to hard rock techniques. Originally opened for gold extraction, the mine is just exclusively used for tours now.
The tour takes about one hour and you must wear a hard hat! Mining equipment from the early days as well as the 15 yard haul truck. Guides explain how to distinguish real gold veins versus pyrite (fools gold) in the quartz of the Comet vein.
Like Black Chasm Cavern, this would be a fun outing for families and there were a number of children on our tour. The only requirement is children be old enough to wear hard hats so they request only 4 years and above.
