Surry Hills Overview

If the worn streets of Surry Hills could talk they would tell some of the most riveting tales of Sydney’s past. Few urban areas can match the colourful legacy Surry Hills has bequeathed to the history of Sydney.

Though Surry Hills has been a popular area over the years due to its close proximity to downtown Sydney, for many years it was considered to a suburb in decline. Back in the 1940s, novelist Ruth Park vividly described the area as an overcrowded slum, with its brothels and gangs, in Poor Man’s Orange and The Harp in the South.

Surry Hills is a very different place today – a colourful and diverse inner-city suburb that is well known for its award winning restaurants and celebrity chefs, its cafés, pubs, art galleries, and its edgy fashion stores and interior design outlets. Urban renewal and rejuvenation, once dirty words, are now buzz-words, uttered frequently by those driving a new period of development in Surry Hills. With its long and colourful history as the "Backyard of the City," Surry Hills is again caught up again in a period of growth with a tantalising blend of commercial and residential development and restorations, reflecting the past and embracing the future.
