Surfer's Paradise YHA Hostel Gold Coast Reviews
Actually in Main Beach Apr 22, 2011
This hostel is part of the YHA Australia group. It's called Surfer's Paradise, but it is actually in Main Beach, about 20 minutes by bus away. The hostel is next to some very posh shopping and the Versace Palazzo - a very expensive hotel. The area is absolutely beautiful, and quieter than Surfer's Paradise. There is a pub, or series of pubs? right behind the hostel on Mariner's Cove with live music a couple of nights at least a week. You can sit on the verandah of the hostel and hear the music if you're having dinner in the hostel. There are small tables around the perimeter where you can eat and drink in relative privacy. I'm not sure about the liquor policy but people do have a bottle of wine with their dinner in this area.
Main Beach is across the street and is gorgeous. It's much quieter and much less crowded than Surfer's so it may or may not be what you are looking for.
There is a free shuttle bus from the hostel to Surfer's every day that runs every hour or so but you have to sign up for it in advance to be sure to get a seat. There is also a return shuttle.
The odd thing in the dorms I stayed in was that it wasn't possible to sit upright in the bottom bunks. This was so annoying that I would think twice about staying there again. But overall, for the fantastic location alone, this place is hard to beat. There is a lot of upscale development going on in this area, so I hope the hostel survives in its present location.
