The Surf in Abreojos is some of the best you'll find anywhere. It is well worth the 15 hour drive from San Diego if you catch it on the right swell. Basically you need a strong SSE swell and the place goes off. because of the points unique orientation, the wind blows heavy OFFSHORE every day, making the waves even more beautiful. There are three main waves. The point is slow, and less finicky then the other waves. It was fun on a shortboard, but it seemed like the longboarders ruled there. Razors breaks in front of the lighthouse and is an expert wave. The wave barrels for like 50 yards and, I was told, is pretty much the easiest/ most dangerous barrel you could ever find. The third wave is just south of razors and was basically somewhere in between.
The town is about 5 minutes north of the campsite where the other breaks were. We met some guys from seal beach who were checking it out and told us the wave was makeable. We paddled out with our new friends and I caught the scariest waves I've ever caught. The wind blows so strong offshore that you cant see until you take the airdrop into the wave, and then pump down the face, and stall as the wave barrels...There were some boils under the surface, so I tried to surf carefully. I still wiped out a few times...and I think I'm lucky not to hurt myself. All and all, the place was sic. The people were super friendly. The waves were awesome. The food was great. The drive sucked.
