Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort Ocho Rios Reviews
Do not stay here ! Oct 22, 2009
The resort is very well situated in the center of Ocho Rios, most restaurants and shops are 10 to 15 minutes walking distance from the resort. It is unfortunate that this "resort" allows for daily passes to the public, mixing guests with people of all ages from all over the country who are welcome to use the pool, gym, dining areas, etc with no control over dress code, cero organiztion, and no respect to others who look for a place to relax.
We stayed in the south tower, which seems to me is the old part of the resort, so because of that the batroom was very old, and the shower walls are cracked. The bed is comfortable, the blankets had holes and burned marks, the room is not insulated properly so sleeping at night is a challenge b/c you can hear the music from the night club about one mile away.
The food, was bellow average. They have 3 restaurants one italian, chinese, and Caribean. You must make reservations 48 hrs prior dining day - careful! it must be exactly 48 hrs, can't be 49 hours- Also, keep in mind that the restaurants open twice a week, so if you are not lucky you may end up eating at the buffet dining area, along with other people who literally fights over food at the wait lines.
All drinks included ? Be Careful, not all drinks are included, if you want your favorite wine, you must pay for, and if you wish to drink grey goose vodka, Johny Walker, Jack Daniels, and other favorites.. they are simply not available. Also drinks for from the bar are avail from 10 am til 1 am. So if your day started at 5 am and by 9:30 you are already at the beach and want a coctail.. it is not going to happen.
I have never been in a Resort like this before, my understanding of vacations is relax, comfort, and fun.. specially when you purchase an all inclusive package and a well advertised all meals and drinks available 24/7, restrictions should not take place.
Oh well, seems like the economy hit this Resort really bad, I have the perception that this Resort was well known for its comfort and facilities once before, but not anymore.
Warning!!! the beach is not private! although they have a security guard to watch over the border of the hotel, the guard salutes with the locals who come in and out of the beach -all yellow eyed- yelling at you hey mon! do you like to party? want cocaine, marihuana, xtasis, sex?
If you think you are going to rest in this place, forget it!
No matter what question you have for the staff, they don't know but will give you some misleading information. They encouraged us to go out to the shops for a walk (although other turist told us is best not to) on a sunday afternoon, when all places are closed! how terrible is that! not only that the places we wanted to visit were closed, but the people around follow you, pull your hand towards them offering drugs, sex, begging for money, etc.
a man offered this cute couple to show them his shop, and in no time they dissapeard, minutes later the couple told me that the man took them to some solitary hall and ask for 40 dollars for showing them "the shop".
It is recommended to walk around ocho rios when you see a cruise ship by the port, this way you know there are several tusrists in the area, so the turist police is around, and always always say No! and keep on walking, do not answer their questions, they ask where r u from, how long r u staying, and how much money you brought, straight up front... so don't let them intimidate you, say no and keep on walking.
In other words, the resort is below average, but very well situated in the center of Ocho Rios. Too bad walking around is not safe, so you might do better staying in your room :(

In 2001 when i 1st visited this hOtel i would've recommended it highly. hOwever in 2009 we revisited this hOtel & i was very dissapointed in may ways. It does seem like a neat lil plaCe to take kids though. It used to be a very romantic exciting place. now its congested & commercial. & they definately need to renovate those old dingy rooms..
