Sunset Fishermans on the beach and in a quite gated community Dec 09, 2008
The Sunset Fishermans Resort and Spa is located right on the beach in the Playacar 1 gated community just south of the Ferry docks in Playa Del Carmen. It's about a 10 - 15 minute walks to 5th Avenue of Playa Del Carmen. The resort is one of the Sunset Group timeshare resorts. The resort currently has two restaurants. One is a buffet style serving breakfast lunch and dinner and the other is a reservations only and serves dinner although sometimes other special functions are served as well. The reservations only restaurant is Italian themed and I felt quite good. Almost all of the rooms face the ocean, but there are some rooms, especially those efficiencies that are part of a two bedroom and only become efficiencies when locked off that don't have ocean views. The beach is right at the resort but is not as large as it originally was. Multiple hurricanes has impacted the beach. They have large sand bags to try to capture sand to restore the beach. It works but slowly. Right now the beach is large enough to lay out on if desired and the bags provide safe ocean areas for young children.
If you are an owner at this resort, the all-inclusive fee is optional. If you trade into this resort the all-inclusive fee is mandatory. I believe you get a slight discount by paying before you arrive, but I am not sure if this is a case for all guests. The all-inclusive includes breakfast and either lunch or dinner and, of course, all drinks. All the rooms at the resort are very close to the water and the beach as the resort is small in intimate. The rooms are kept quite clean as maid service visits twice a day if you let them. They do have free wireless internet access in the lobby area only. One of the greatest strengths at this resort is it's staff. Luis and Jose are tireless in keeping guests entertained. The concierges will assist you in any reasonable requests. The whole staff seems quite motivated. They use armbands to track all-inclusive status. If you are an adult they enforce this very strongly as appropriate. If you are a child they are much less strict. The sales staff has moved from this resort and have relocated to Hacienda Tres Rios north of Playa Del Carmen. The concierge is now the focal point for sales tour initiation so be prepared. Mexican law is much less strict regarding sales techniques for timeshares than similar laws in the US so expect a hard sell. The former sales space at this resort is slated to become another restaurant with a seating are on top of the entrance at the front of the resort. I do not know any more details but a third restaurant will be a welcome development at this resort as food is one of their weaknesses in my opinion. The resort also has a beach club to the north about 5-8 minutes walk away. It doesn't have any facilities to speak of though although I never went to it, only walked by. The also have bicycles, I believe for free and a car rental company on site. They do not have an onsite gift store but do exchange dollars for pesos if they can. I like this resort a lot as it is small, intimate and in a quiet location surrounded by private homes in a gated community with small size Mayan ruins nearby and I like the design of the resort as well. There are iguanas and limited car and foot traffic. There are some larger resorts south of this location. Also if you won here, you may be able to get 50% off the tournament quality golf course in the Playacar development. Also some purchases come with a yacht club membership too. I have the golf club discount but not the yacht club. |
