Sunset Bungalows Kendwa Reviews
great room and beautiful beach Feb 19, 2015
We stayed in a beach bungalow (number 41) and the room was great! Lovely decor, clean, large bed with mosquito net, working A/C, room safe, fridge, fair size bathroom, hot water and a little private patio out front. No Wifi in the room and you only had about 5 hours free, after that it was a pound an hour. Breakfast was your basic eggs, toast, beans, fruit, and some tasty donuts. Food at the Bikini Bar at night was good. However, our last night we went next door to Kendwa Rocks and their menu looked amazing! Drinks at the Bikini Bar were hit and miss. They were tasty when they had the needed ingredients, but ran out of quite a bit of stuff after the Friday night dance party. And ya, they have a dance party that runs until about 3am on Friday nights. I had done a snorkelling trip that day, so I slept right through it. My husband, on the other hand, was up listening to the thumping until it finished. (He should have gone out for a boogie! ha ha) There is a dive/snorkel tour company attached to the hotel if that's something you're looking for. One thing that was rather annoying about Sunset (as is with most beach resorts), they are short on beach beds!! So if you want a bed to soak up the rays through the day, you'll have to get out there early or cross your fingers that someone is going to give up their bed half way through the day. I had asked staff if there was an extra bed around one day, after seeing them wrangle up about 5 beds the day before for some tourists, only to be told to look myself...but oh, did I want to book a sunset cruise? Ugh. And even when you do find a bed, most of them are in poor condition, so make sure you look for one that's sturdy without broken strings! The hotel does have a no beach tout policy though, which is nice. There are people selling stuff all up and down the beach, but they can't come onto hotel property, so you won't be hassled while you're laying out. Another added bonus, was the use of the card machines. The hotel takes bank cards, VISA, mastercard, etc. We made a special trip back into Stonetown from Bwejuu thinking we weren't going to have enough cash to pay for our stay. Was no need to worry...they take cards!!!
Oh and as a head's up, the beach bungalows don't actually face the ocean unless you get an end one, which would be either number 46 or 47. If you're the bungalow type, you may want to request one of those rooms so you get an ocean view!

Good budget option right on a beautiful beach Aug 02, 2014
Sunset Bungalows is a good budget option as Zanzibar can be pricey. The bungalows are right on Kendwa beach on the northern tip of Zanzibar. We got one of the only two bungalows facing the ocean for $80 per night, the room was huge with large king sized 4 poster bed, big bathroom and balcony. The rooms were nicely decorated and very clean on the inside, the outside of the bungalows did look a little tired. The white sand beach is the best in the area and has grass umbrellas and sun beds for your use. When we were there they were building a new restaurant/bar so they were serving food from the small cafe where you have your included breakfast. The plus side with the resort is the rooms are excellent for the price although I can only speak for the beach bungalows, the rooms nearer the reception are rooms in a hotel style block and I believe there are dorm options. The resort also has its own dive shop called Scuba Do which is supposed to be good. When we were there in August 2014 it had just been taken over by new management and they were making some improvements like the new restaurant and bar and putting in Internet.
The pros are:
Location right on one the best beaches in that strip of coastline
Very quiet at night
Good budget option
The outside of the rooms and the resort in general is looking a little tired and needs a lift.
We found the staff a bit rude and a little disinterested.
There is no swimming pool although you do have the lovely Indian ocean on your doorstep
The shower hot water ran out quickly
The breakfast which is included was not the best and the service was slow.
Maybe the cons will change under new management.
