Stuttgarter Weindorf Reviews
Seasonal: Best way to taste local wine without leaving the city Sep 07, 2012
EDIT: This is going on NOW! 28. August bis 8. September 2013. Added some photos from this year as well
The Stuttgarter Weindorf, or just simple called Weinfest, happens once a year, usually at the end of August/beginning of September. It lasts two weeks.
It is located in the pedestrian area off Königsstrasse around Schillerplatz and is easily reached from the "Stadtmitte" subway stop. (It's the same location as the Christmas market and the same size.) From Schlossplatz walk toward the Old Castle and the church with the big towers.
Imagine a bunch of little wooden structures decorated with fall flowers and grape vines, or just look at my pictures. ;)
First of, there is WINE. Local wine and you can try them all. You'll have to pay a deposit for the class if you get the wine "to go". Basically you can walk around with a glass of wine in your hand and try some local FOOD along the way.
Food includes Swabian specialties like Spaetzle, Schupfnudeln, Maultaschen (all pasta based) and, of course, Sauerkraut, Speck/bacon, and Flammkuchen (like pizza with hearty flavors).
If you're not a wine person, they also have mixed drinks of the season, such as HUGO (sparkling wine, with mint and syrup) or Aperol Spritz (it's red and delicious, don't ask me what Aperol classifies as).
If it is too busy at the fest, grab some food and some wine and head over to Schlossplatz, sit in the grass and enjoy your picnic.
I really do recommend going to the fest if you find yourself in Stuttgart at the end of August.
