Stuart Mosby Civil War Cavalry Museum Mar 17, 2015
During the Civil War the Union troops occupying Northern Virginia were terrorized by a band of guerrilla fighters known as Mosby's Rangers. Colonel John Mosby, the "Grey Ghost," miraculously avoided capture and after the war became a lawyer and later the American ambassador to Hong Kong, his Confederate compatriots disowning him for serving under a Republican president. Mosby's wartime adventures are remembered in this tiny museum hidden away on a back street in the sprawling suburbs of Washington.
There is an eclectic mix of artifacts on display, some munitions and bullets, some busts and bayonets, some personal belongings and momentos from post-war reunions of the Rangers. Mosby's superior in the Confederate army, the legendary J.E.B. Stuart, is also remembered though the primary focus is on the Grey Ghost. The museum is a hangout for Civil War buffs, two of whom were quite happy to show me around and explain the various stories behind the display items.
It's an informative way to spend an hour, especially since the museum is free (though only open Saturdays through Mondays). The building itself is an old Texaco gas station from the 1930s that was built with bricks from a demolished colonial-era house that sat nearby.
The surrounding area was once a massive Union military camp housing thousands of soldiers during the Civil War, but there is very little evidence of it left with all the modern houses and strip malls and super highways. Just across the street from the museum sits a small church that served as a field hospital in 1861 before being restored after the war. Quaint reminders of a time long past.
